The Wrapp - Flap, Snap, and Cat

Hey there, welcome to our latest edition of The Wrapp.

This is a chance for you to see what the various members of the Pocket Gamer team are planning to play over this weekend and will, hopefully, give you an idea of some of the weird and wonderful things we get up to when we’re not keeping you up to speed with the latest news and tips. Heck, you might even find a new game to play.

I’m now completely hooked on Roller Coaster Tycoon again, but this time through RCT Classic on Apple Arcade. It’s a weird feeling to be playing an almost like-for-like recreation of a tycoon game that I played as a child on mobile, especially as — for the longest time — I used mobile tycoon games (looking at you Kairosoft) as a break from heavier RPGs and strategy games that I was playing through on console and PC.

In other - and no doubt, for regular readers, predictable - news, I’m wading knee-deep through Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket again. The new pack has landed, and so I’ve got to balance out trying to finish off the previous expansions (I just need Pachirisu EX from Space-Time, and Wugtrio EX from Shining Revelry) while starting my journey to a full set of the new deck.

Luckily, the Rayquaza event has been a massive help as, alongside the new expansion, the developers have been incredibly generous with Pack Hourglass rewards, and so, between those solo challenges and the Celestial Guardians ones, I’ve already been able to do the 10x pack opens three times.

My computer’s struggling a little in the mini heatwave that’s hit the UK this week, but if it cools down, then I’m going to spend some time with one of my legacy saves in The Sims 4. I’ve just finished building a mega, four-storey property in Nordhaven complete with wee balconies (which, um, definitely didn’t take me ages to figure out) that I’m excited for my Sims to settle into! I think the next thing I’m going to focus on is trying to set up a small business for them that actually turns a profit.

This weekend, I will mostly be playing Marvel Snap on my iPhone. I am getting into Star Wars Outlaws on my PS5, but I can’t take that with me on my journey to the Dubai GameExpo Summit, at least not without busting the carry-on weight limit.

The core loop of Marvel Snap remains superb, and I’m addicted to its fast-paced, card-based PvP matches. With four days left in the What If...? season (which I paid actual money for, because I’m that much of a Marvel fan), I’ve not seen as much use of Captain Carter as I was expecting. The season hasn’t been especially kind to my two favourite deck strategies (a “Move” archetype with Kingpin and Scream; and a “Surfer Control” or 3-Cost Flood archetype using Silver Surfer) but they’re still incredibly fun, so I’ll be tweaking them a little in a last-minute effort to claw back some points.

The High Voltage game variant ran from April 17th until last week, and it’s been one of my favourites, so I’ll be bereft without that.

The big addition to the game this week is the addition of Snap Packs and Token Packs. This new initiative overhauls the way you acquire cards. It means the end of Spotlight Caches, so now you can spend tokens directly in the Card Shop, which should make building your preferred deck more efficient. If you update now, you’ll get a free Series 5 collector’s pack. Woo-hoo!

Thanks to the release of the SEED content in SD Gundam G Generation Eternal, there is no other game that matters. There is a limited-time banner with two UR units and a UR supporter, an Astray event with SSR units and characters, and then the most important addition. A brand new original story that bridges SEED and SEED Destiny. SEED is my favourite of the Gundam universes, so I am delighted.

I also tried out Oblivion's Remaster for a few hours this week, which made me realise just how much it pales in significance to Skyrim. So, I picked up the Legendary Edition on Xbox and have returned to the snow with my dual-axe-wielding Nord. It is still a fantastic game.

Aside from my predictable dilemma of catching up with card packs in Pokemon TCG Pocket, I’ll be diving into Hello Kitty Friends Match this weekend because I’m in dire need of some wholesome, magic-filled vibes. I’ve been stressing out over moving for the past few days, so helping Hello Kitty bring enchanted wonder to a run-down isekai island is exactly what I need.

It’s a shame my beloved Gudetama isn’t here, but the lazy egg most certainly is during the Month of Meh event in Hello Kitty Island Adventure! Oh, for the love of all things eggy - does this mean I need to get an Apple Arcade subscription now?

I am going to give this new adorable puzzler a try! It’s called Looking for Aliens, and it’s actually supposed to be “relaxing” (find hidden aliens and solve various puzzles) - we’ll see about that, I tend to lose my patience after a while.

Aside from that, given we have a few sunny days, I would like to enjoy some Cookie Run: Kingdom in the park while having a picnic. There’s nothing better than having the possibility to enjoy any game you want while outside in the middle of nature. True gamer quality time!

Ahem, the Elder Scrolls. That is all. Alright, being serious, I’ve obviously dived into the Oblivion Remaster, and might decide to give Blades another chance. It’s also had me thinking more about Dark and Darker, because there’s really not all that many pure first-person dungeon crawling experiences on mobile off the top of my head.

Aside from that, Vampire Survivors remains in rotation, but I’ll be mostly soaking up the sun until the weather turns sour next week.

There's a lot to consider based on all the new releases. With the Lisa games now on Android, that's a perfect excuse to revisit them. I went through the trauma once already, maybe I'll be more prepared for it this time. I'll also try to see if I can get all the characters in the roster to complete that aspect. Then there's the monkey on the gamer's back that is Flappy Bird, so I'll try to beat my high score of 20.

I think I'll spend some time learning more about Game of Thrones: Kingsroad so I can brace my devices for its release.

Alright, so these days I'm playing a good amount of Ludus. I think I mentioned that in the previous week's Wrapp. Since then, I've made some progress and I'm now able to take part in tournaments and other events, which is fun. I would recommend this game to anyone who is looking for something casual but still strategic. To give you an idea about the gameplay, it's similar to Castle Duels: PvP Battle Arena. You have a deck of five monster cards that you deploy on a grid arena. By merging the same monster cards together, you level them up and unlock their potential.  The first player to reach five wins wins the game.

Other than that, if I have any spare time, I think I'll play some Teamfight Tactics with a friend of mine. We are diamond rank currently, aiming for masters. More about that next week.

I'm acutely aware I'm starting to sound like an echo, but I'll be diving into some more Pokemon TCG Pocket over the weekend. There's a new Ranked season underway, and I'm hoping I can snag two SaberLeomon... Ahem. I mean Solgaleo, of course. Anyway, doing so would allow me to lean into the current meta like an uncreative coward. I never managed to get two Giratina Ex in time last season, and I'm content to blame my struggles on that and not my exceptional misplay skills.

Outside of that, I'm tempted to download Flappy Bird and see if it remains as infuriating and compulsive as it did in my youth.
