Ahead of the Game - Soul Huntress is roguelike dungeon-crawling with shapeshifting baddies
I can do this all day

- Procedurally generated dungeons
- Level up and enchant your gear after each run
- More game modes to come once it's launched
Hello and welcome to Ahead of the Game, a series where we tell you all about an upcoming game that, despite not being out yet, is available for you to play at the time of publishing. Through this series, you can grab a chance to play games well ahead of their release date, be that through Soft Launch, Open Beta, Demos, or more.
I've always been partial to roguelike adventures, especially when the loop is so compelling I just can't help but want to try over and over again. Does that mean I'm a bit of a masochist deep down? Perhaps. But it definitely means that when a gameplay loop is done really, really well, it'll compel you to venture out, die, and repeat forever until you finally succeed.

I guess that long preamble is basically just me trying to justify why I love roguelikes so much, and with Soul Huntress, it seems like a good candidate for something that has the potential to lure me in and keep me hooked with endless replayability.
No, it's not one of my beloved card battlers, but it does recreate that same desire within me to want to try and try again despite my many, many failures. Essentially, Soul Huntress will have you braving the dark into procedurally generated dungeons to rid the world of evil shapeshifters, but typical of the genre, each run will give you plenty of resources (and lessons learned) to help you level up.

You can upgrade your gear, grab cool loot and equipment, then soldier on until you make it out of the dungeon alive. You'll also have little side quests to finish along the way - like rescuing hapless villagers (of course) and finding elusive keys - but the main loop is to fight monsters, die, then try again.
And really, that's all you'll ever need in a roguelike.
So, how do you play Soul Huntress?
Because it's currently in open beta on Android, not all features and game modes are available just yet - you can only try your hand in the campaign for now, but it does give you a pretty good idea of how the full launch might go. Soul Huntress also comes from the makers of Elysia: The Astral Fall, which I can kinda see, given the visuals are pretty similar (albeit the darker tone here).
There's also that soft, AFK Journey-esque feel to how the world and characters are designed, so it's safe to say it's got the makings of a good time-waster on mobile once it's officially out.
At the moment, if you're eager to give it a go yourself, you can download it from Google Play, or join the community of followers on Facebook to stay updated on the official launch!
