MARVEL Future Fight Interview: Netmarble’s Terry Lee discusses the action RPG’s 10 year anniversary event and future plans

In a day and age where many popular games cease operations for sometimes trivial and often times incredulous reasons, it’s reassuring to see a game like MARVEL Future Fight celebrate its 10th anniversary; even more so given that, as an exclusively mobile title, it’s operating in a landscape where longevity is seemingly an afterthought for many publishers.

In the 10 years since its release, Netmarble has made a habit of continually improving its superhero RPG with new fan favourite characters, game modes, and special themed events, like the most recent Thunderbolts update. And this month, to celebrate its milestone achievement, players are being treated to a host of anniversary rewards and bonuses.

We had the recent good fortune to discuss with Netmarble Business Division Director, Terry Lee, about MARVEL Future Fight’s anniversary festivities, as well as what the future holds for the beloved RPG.

Let us start by asking how it feels to see MARVEL Future Fight celebrate its 10th anniversary?

It’s rare for a mobile game to run globally for over a decade. I’m incredibly proud of the MARVEL Future Fight team for reaching this milestone. Most of all, I want to sincerely thank all the players for their unwavering support and love over the years.

In which countries has it been especially popular?

MARVEL Future Fight is played in over 170 countries, with the United States and South Korea being the top two. Players from across Asia, the Americas, and Europe also continue to enjoy the game.

What has been the driving force behind the game’s 10-year run?

The key to our longevity is minimizing the gap between what fans emotionally expect from the MARVEL Universe and how that’s reflected in the game. Consistent, meaningful updates over the years have also been crucial to maintaining long-term success.

How many heroes and uniforms have been released to date? Which ones are most popular?

As of the update inspired by MARVEL Studios’ Thunderbolts*, the game features 274 heroes and 528 uniforms. The most popular uniform to date is Luna Snow’s “Summer Lilac,” released in August 2023. Luna Snow is one of the game’s most iconic heroes, and this particular summer-themed uniform captivated players with its unique color and strong performance.

Luna Snow is indeed iconic. How was she created?

Luna Snow originated from a collaboration with MARVEL, who proposed creating an exclusive character for MARVEL Future Fight. Since our team is based in Korea, the idea of a Korean hero came naturally. MARVEL also wanted a fresh character background, which led to Luna Snow being created as a K-pop idol and singer. She’s now fully integrated into the MARVEL Universe and has received more love than we initially imagined.

Are there plans for a major overhaul or remaster of the game?

Rather than a large-scale overhaul like a full remaster, we're focusing on adding new modes and improving user convenience. One major update currently in development is a new Epic Quest, which we aim to release in the second half of this year.

What’s being done for the 10th anniversary to help new and returning players?

We’re offering major rewards, including a Tier-4 Selector and 10,000 Crystals. New players who log in for seven days will receive strong heroes like Tier-3 Iron Man to help build a solid team quickly. We’re also holding uniform and dimension chest discount events to accelerate progress. Additionally, we’re encouraging participation in the “Agent Training Center” friend referral event for even more rewards.

Can you share the mid- and long-term roadmap? Any hints on upcoming characters or content?

We know the game can feel complex for newcomers, so we’re reviewing several improvements to make it more accessible. As for new content, we plan to continue releasing themed updates. Without spoiling too much, we can tease that a highly requested theme from last year is finally on the way—so stay tuned!

Regarding higher-tier growth, we introduced Tier-4 about three years ago, and many characters are still progressing through Tier-2 and Tier-3. Because of this, we don’t currently have plans to add Tier-5 or similar content in the immediate future.

Any final words for the players?

Reaching 10 years is a huge milestone, but we believe the potential of MARVEL Future Fight as a MARVEL Universe title is still just beginning. As more MARVEL stories unfold through films, shows, and comics, we’ll continue developing themed updates and introducing new heroes.

This journey has only been possible thanks to the passion and support of our players. We’re deeply grateful and promise to keep doing our best as we move toward the 15th—and even 20th—anniversary. Thank you.
