Death and taxes, as Joe Black says

TownsFolk will have you juggling natural disasters, wild animals, and taxes for the King, out now
  • New roguelite strategy with unpredictable events
  • Keep your townsfolk alive and happy
  • Pay tribute to the King or else

Colony builder TownsFolk has officially launched, marking Short Circuit Studio's shift to something a tad darker than their usual mobile offerings in the past. I do find that the visuals still have that soft, almost ethereal feel to them, but for the most part, it's all darker, grittier, and foggier - the last one being of utmost importance given there seems to be more than meets the eye beyond the fog.

Yes, you'll play as a leader of a newly built settlement on the edge of the world, and it's up to you to make sure the titular townsfolk survive through harsh weather, famine, and toxic plagues. It's bad enough you have to keep your people happy (and alive, for that matter), but you also have to grapple with the increasing demands of the Crown. It's a living, dynamic world, after all, and you have to learn to change with it.

It seems that every playthrough will promise a different narrative, especially since there are ancient mysteries to unravel and unexpected events to somehow survive through. You'll really have to make the tough choices here if you want to live to lead another day - paying tributes and taking on natural disasters included.
