Survival games are fun if you like running for your life - quite literally. Today's pick is one that I quickly fell in love with, and that's why, in this Valhalla Survival guide, I'll share all the knowledge I've gathered. These tips will help you avoid some mistakes I made, and help you with just about everything that a beginner might need.

From picking the best hero to start with to selecting the right skills, I've shared my thoughts on all the important things you need to know if your plan is to beat every stage on the first try. Trust me, it's not going to be easy once the stage difficulty starts exceeding yours by a lot.

Personally, I've always loved a good roguelike survival game - from Survivor.io to many others, I've found it extremely soothing to acquire new skills and try out unique combos. That same principle applies here, but the setting is a little different. It looks quite similar to one I have always loved (Path of Exile), but the gameplay is obviously different.

We've also covered the latest codes for Valhalla Survival, so if you haven't had a chance to redeem them for some free Diamonds, go ahead and do that right now!

Prepare for the most linear adventure of your lifetime

If you like the genre, I am sure you'll enjoy Valhalla Survival as much as I did. Of course, that's unless you want a story-rich experience (which is lacking here). That aside, it's a great choice to just pick up and play without any further commitments. It's not as complex as Vampire Survivors - not even close.

Taking all these into consideration, let's dive into the Valhalla Survival guide!

Tip #1 - Which is the best starting hero?

3 starter heroes in valhalla survival

The first hero you start playing is the one you'll unlock for free. The game lets you buy more heroes later on, but if you want an easy hero to get you started, my recommendation for you would be to pick the Sorceress. This hero is super easy to play - she's ranged, and she has a kit that allows you to shred through enemies like a hot knife through butter.

If you want a bit of a challenge though, you can, of course, pick the Rogue! This would not be my first pick, since it's going to require a little bit more position awareness and she's also a little bit more squishy than the Sorceress and Warrior.

As a tank, you can go for the Warrior, who is a melee fighter that is also super fun to play (if that's your style). Regardless, personally, I went for the Sorceress, since she's the type of class I would normally play, and so far I've had no issue destroying any enemy that came my way and even some of the bosses. Yes, it's that easy!

You can unlock the other classes (and you should unlock them) with 150000 Gold, so once you have enough saved up, you can go ahead and do that. In time, you should unlock all the heroes anyway if you want a little bit more variety.

Tip #2 - What's the best thing to spend your money on?

I personally believe that the one thing you should spend your money on (if you choose to do so) is the season pass. From the pass, you can unlock a new hero, and if you really have the means to do it, you can buy all 3 passes to unlock all the premium heroes.

Each season pass costs about $23, and they give you the same rewards, aside from the hero. If you want to buy a season pass, I suggest you start with the one that gives you the hero you desire most.

As for the other premium items in the shop, I wouldn't necessarily recommend buying anything else. The pass is more than enough in terms of resources, and if you play the game constantly, you won't need to spend a dime - unless, of course, that's what you want to do.

Tip #3 - Pick the skills based on the layout of the arena

3 skill combos in vs

Each stage has a different layout - some are smaller, while others might seem endless, and the skills you pick for your hero are key to clearing these with ease. I recommend you always spend the first couple of levels paying attention to the arena's layout, because you can then make an easier choice in terms of skills.

As a general rule of thumb, you should always pick Barrier. This is the one skill that you will most likely end up using every single time, on every different hero, and it's a top-tier skill in terms of usefulness.

The other skills you should be picking are always the ones that give you good AoE damage. Those will make clearing the waves of enemies a lot easier.

Tip #4 - Try to pick as many Altars and chests as you can

fire and water soldiers surrounding the hero

As you keep playing, you will sometimes come across some altars - all you need to do is stand in their aura for a little while until the circle fills up, and you will get a random blessing. The blessings vary, but all of them are useful buffs that you'll most likely end up benefitting a lot from.

The same goes for the chests. These can even drop amazing gear (that's where I got my Legendary gear from) and if you're in their vicinity, you shouldn't skip opening them.

Tip #5 - Pick only the skills and passives you can combo

Whenever you're offered to pick a new skill or passive, you should plan ahead and think about what you want your build to look like. The best thing you can do is try and pick passive skills that can affect multiple active skills (such as cooldown), and then try to get the active skills that evolve with that passive.

Avoid going for random skills every time (unless you have no other choice), and instead focus on levelling up the skills you already have. Even if you end up having 4-5 skills instead of 6, as long as they are all evolved, you'll have no problem defeating any enemy you come across.

Tip #6 - Avoid red carpets and big hordes of enemies

battle in valhalla survival

It goes without saying that whenever you're challenging a boss, you should try to avoid all of their skills. If you play an especially squishy hero, this is even more important. As you keep progressing, enemies become more and more dangerous, and you could end up getting one-shot.

Some elite enemies will also have red carpets, but most heroes won't have an issue tanking those. Ideally, you want to avoid these too, but I know that can't always be the case.

While we're on the topic of avoiding stuff, you should never run into a horde of enemies. Unless you're extremely tanky, the enemies can shred your HP bar in a matter of seconds, and the worst part - they also stagger you. That means, whenever you run into enemies, you will get "paralysed" for a split second. It won't automatically stunlock you, but unless you have some stagger resistance, you will be drastically slowed down. Hence the importance of avoiding big hordes and butting heads with them.

Tip #7 - Keep upgrading your hero!

Last but not least, regardless of the hero you pick, you should be constantly upgrading them. Like I said in the beginning, I went for the Sorceress (Lif), which I absolutely love. The best thing you can do is to pick one hero and invest all of your resources into them. Level them up, gear them up, and head into battle.

If you have unlocked another hero in the meantime, you can always go back and reset your previously used one. Just keep in mind to play what you like, because that's when the game becomes a lot more enjoyable!
