I am a big Pokemon Go fan, running an official Pokemon Go community in my local town. When playing with a large group of people, you really do run into people who absolutely love the game and play it all the time. I consider myself a super player, but not quite as into the game as Gurnaldinho - a level 50 Player who sets additional goals to keep the game interesting.
In January of 2024, Gurnaldinho challenged himself to catch a shiny Pokemon on 300 different days in 2024, giving himself a few break days to the year, but this morphed into him starting a Shiny Streak, which ended at 372 days in a row where he caught a Shiny.
It's worth noting that Gurnaldinho is a pure player - no Pokemon Go Plus+ here, just pure determination, learning which shinies are boosted when, raiding with remote raid passes, and spending probably far too long playing Pokemon Go. We sat down with Gurnaldinho at my local Geek Retreat to talk to him after his streak finally ended.
What made you want to take on the challenge of catching a shiny every single day? It's more that I've always liked to do a gaming challenge every year. In previous years, it was always an Xbox games challenge. Getting a 2 million game score was one over a longer period of time, and naturally getting into Pokemon Go, it was just doing something with Pokemon Go. The main thing I like about Pokemon Go is shinies, so it seemed like a natural fit.

The Streak actually became a by-sort of challenge of the original one, because it was just to catch shinies on 300 out of 366 days of the year (as it was a leap year), and of course, while I was doing it, I was tracking the streak at the same time, as the more days I missed, obviously the less likely I was to do it. And then it was 50, and a 100, and it just suddenly became a case of keeping it going. Then the goal became keeping it going a year.
How did your Shiny Streak end?I must admit I did relax a little bit, I wasn't on it. Then it got to the last four hours of that day and I hadn't gotten one. I thought, you know what, I'll have a go. I'll go for it and try to carry on. It just didn't work out, every trick in the book didn't work.
On the day that Gurnaldinho ended his streak, there weren't any shinies in 5* raids, it was enormous. There was no event actively on in the game, no real boosted Pokemon that he could target... It was just a tough time. What are some tips you've learned to find shinies? The obvious one is to check everything. It doesn't really need to be stated, but you can also learn which ones are perma-boosted, which is something I did. So if it's a situation where I couldn't check everything, like on a bus going to work or any moving vehicle, I knew which ones to hone in on.
Learning what's on the Field Research tasks to see which challenges have a perma boosted Pokemon on them, so that you do not discard them, also helps. For some reason the task 'Purify three Shadow Pokemon' always seemed to have a perma boosted Pokemon as the reward.

Legendary Raids, if there is a Shiny version, are a 1 in 20 chance, Community Days are sort of like a day off, you know, 1 in 25 chance, but they spawn at an incredible rate. It's mainly building up knowledge and beyond that, it's timing.
Be aware of the time of day and try not to let it get too late if you haven't caught one. I'm very fortunate that I work where there's a massive spawn pool. Some days I would turn up to work an hour, an hour and a half, and occasionally two hours early so I could play at work because I have that advantage to it. I also do actually have a good spawn point where I live as well.
Parks are genuinely good spawn points. Learning the good spawn points in your town is another good tip. I knew where to walk to, to get the better spawn points in my town.
Putting on your incense to increase spawn rates, along with the Roar of Time to extend incense can help as well. There is also Moongeist Beam, which spawns nighttime Pokemon - it's a godsend. That wasn't around for well over 150 rates, but it has four perma-boosted in its spawn pool, with one being in the most common tier and one being in the second most common tier as well.
Why don't you use auto-catchers?
I've got nothing against them - I always said it's a recognized technique, I mean they are literally in the game, but for me, I like to feel like I've caught every Pokemon and spun every stop myself. I have nothing against them - it's just not for me.
What was one of your best moments when catching a Shiny for your challenge?I got back into Pokemon Go after a lengthy layoff - I never really had a favourite Pokemon. So I started to pick one myself, but that felt kind of wrong. I decided I would just play naturally until I found one that resonated with me, and that was Seedot. The day I got my first Shiny Seedot was actually a pretty good one for me as well. It wasn't a significant number, because I would always label when it is a significant number, every sort of 50, 100, 150, 365, all marked as Day whatever, and be kept forever. My first Shundo as well was one that was significant.
I was actually streaming on Twitch at the time that I caught the Shundo. It was an enjoyable moment and I got a bit of a buzz.

What was the worst day of your challenge?
The day the streak broke, I mean I was past day 365, so it was a little bit of a relief. There was a day in the last week before day 365, where I caught a shiny Eevee with six minutes to go before midnight. I thought the 40 minutes before midnight day was bad... I actually ended up walking quite a distance away from my home as I did not want to check spawn points I had already checked, so I then needed to walk quite a ways back home.
Do you have a new challenge for 2025?Sticking with Pokemon Go again, I believe this one is difficult and I wouldn't be surprised if I failed it... I've got the hundos to do it. I am going to try and get 100 different, 100 percent hundos, a hundred best buddies, and max all of them out at level 50, so fully powered up, and still have a hundred million stardust in the bank. Essentially, you've probably gotta get two hundred million stardust in the year.
How are you recuperating the Stardust?I have been taking advantage of any sort of quests where you get a reward with Stardust. Timed research, field research, either one. I put them to one side and then claim them at the same time with a starpiece. I time that with the seven-day streak as well, because on the last day, you get quite a bit of stardust. Any Community days with three times boost on Stardust, I starpiece those events... It will be tough but a challenge is meant to be a challenge.
