Around the office water cooler here at Pocket Gamer towers, one of the hot topics is always the Dadish series. This collection of platformers is a favourite of many of our staff, and for good reason; and there's no better time to give it a go than with the release of Thomas K. Young's newest project Be Brave, Barb!
This gravity-bending platformer sees you playing as the titular cactus as she goes on a quest to defeat King Cloud and his henchmen. Boasting plenty of positive affirmations (unusual, I know) the core mechanic of Be Brave, Barb sees you using gravity to jump between platforms and avoid obstacles; akin to something like the cult classic Gravity Rush.
Coming complete with 100 levels, five bosses and "questionable therapy" (their words, not mine) Be Brave, Barb is sure to appeal to fans of the Dadish series and platformers alike! It even comes complete with controller support and comfortably crunchy retro graphics.
If there's anything you can say about the catalogue of Thomas K. Young is that it's got a comfortably retro feel that seems particular to no platform or time period. It's a fashion I feel oddly nostalgic for, as the visual style was one that was very popular in the indie scene when I was younger.
But in terms of quality, there's no indication that this latest release is going to be lacking in the usual polish that's specific to the Dadish series. So, if you've been itching for more and are willing to go a little outside the box, maybe Barb will be the new hero you've been waiting for.
